Not every dream you have is a prophetic dream.

This is one of the most important distinctions a seer prophet must learn to make, and one of the least taught.

There are broadly two categories of dreams that every person experiences.

The first is the soul dream.

The soul dream originates from within you. It is shaped by your emotions, your fears, your unresolved conflicts, your desires, and the events of your waking life. If you had a difficult conversation before bed and dreamed about conflict, that is likely your soul processing what happened. If you are anxious about a situation and dream about it repeatedly, that is your inner world speaking — not the Lord.

Soul dreams are not meaningless. They can reveal what is happening inside you emotionally and spiritually. But they are not prophetic communications from the Lord and should not be treated as such.

The second is the prophetic dream.

The prophetic dream originates from outside you. It carries a weight and a clarity that soul dreams do not have. You wake up knowing that something was communicated, even if you do not yet understand what. These dreams often have a symbolic language, a narrative structure, and a spiritual atmosphere that feels distinctly different from ordinary dreaming.

The challenge is that both types of dreams can feel vivid and significant. Both can involve people you know, places you recognise, and situations that feel urgent. And without discernment, a seer can spend enormous energy trying to interpret soul dreams as if they were prophetic communications, and miss the actual prophetic dreams because they assumed they were just soul activity.

So how do you begin to tell the difference?

A prophetic dream will often carry a weight that stays with you after you wake. Not anxiety — weight. There is a difference between waking up unsettled because of a stressful dream and waking up with a settled sense that something significant was communicated.

A prophetic dream will often contain symbolic language that your natural mind would not construct. The imagery will feel deliberately chosen rather than randomly assembled.

A prophetic dream will often be confirmed. The Lord does not speak once and disappear. If something significant was communicated He will bring it back through a second witness, another dream, a Scripture, a word from a trusted voice.

Learning to discern between these two categories will not happen overnight. But it begins with paying attention to recording your dreams, praying over them, and asking the Lord to teach you the difference between your own voice and His.

The seer who learns this distinction stops being overwhelmed by every dream and starts becoming a precise instrument in the hands of the Lord.
