Short answer: be very careful saying that directly to someone.
It may be biblically rooted, but it can also be pastorally harmful if used harshly or as a label.
1. What the Scripture Actually Says
In Malachi 3:8, God told the nation of Israel:
“Will a man rob God… in tithes and offerings.”

Important context:
This was a prophetic correction to a community, not a personal insult to individuals
It was meant to call people back to covenant faithfulness, not to shame them
2. Why Calling Someone “a robber” Can Be Problematic
Even if the verse uses strong language, applying it like this:
“You didn’t tithe, so you are a robber”

can:
Feel accusing and condemning
Push people away instead of drawing them closer to God
Miss the deeper issue, which is the heart, not just the act
Remember how Jesus Christ dealt with people:
He corrected, but with grace and truth
He focused on transformation, not labeling

3. The New Testament Perspective
In the New Covenant:
Giving is encouraged, but it is rooted in the heart and willingness
For example:
Give willingly, not under compulsion (see 2 Corinthians 9:7)
God loves a cheerful giver, not a pressured one
So the emphasis shifts from:
“You must give or you are guilty”
to
“Give as an expression of love, faith, and obedience”

4. A Better Way to Communicate It
Instead of labeling someone, you can say:
“Tithing is one way we honor God and show trust in Him.”
“Let’s examine our hearts and see if we are putting God first.”
“Giving is part of our relationship with God, not just a rule.”
This approach:
Teaches truth
Builds people up
Leaves room for conviction by the Holy Spirit
5. Balanced Conclusion
The Bible does use strong language in Malachi
But it is not wise to label individuals as ‘robbers’
Focus on teaching, love, and conviction, not condemnation.
May God have mercy on US in Jesus Christ name AMEN.
