I Am Black, But Comely

Text: Song of Solomon 1:5

“I am black, but comely, O ye daughters of Jerusalem, as the tents of Kedar, as the curtains of Solomon.”

Introduction

This verse is a powerful statement of identity, confidence, and beauty. The bride in Song of Solomon speaks honestly about her outward appearance, yet she boldly declares her beauty and worth.

Spiritually, this verse reminds believers that even though we may have weaknesses, scars, struggles, or a painful past, God still sees beauty, value, and purpose in us.

1. God Looks Beyond Outward Appearance

The bride says:

“I am black, but comely.”

In those days, darker skin often came from working under the sun. She may have been looked down upon by others, yet she still recognized her value.

People may judge:

Your background,

Your appearance,

Your past mistakes,

Your financial condition,

but God sees deeper than human eyes.

1 Samuel 16:7

“Man looketh on the outward appearance, but the Lord looketh on the heart.”

God values the heart more than outward appearance.

2. You Must Know Your Worth In God

The woman did not deny her condition, but she also did not reject herself.

She acknowledged:

Her reality,

Yet also her beauty.

This teaches us an important lesson: Do not let the opinions of people define your identity.

In Christ:

You are chosen.

You are loved.

You are valuable.

You are accepted.

The enemy wants people to feel rejected and ashamed, but God calls His children beautiful and precious.

3. God Can Turn Pain Into Beauty

The verse compares her to:

“The tents of Kedar” and “the curtains of Solomon.”

The tents of Kedar were dark outside, while Solomon’s curtains were beautiful and royal. This shows that God can take a life marked by hardship and still produce beauty and glory from it.

Your suffering does not cancel your destiny.

God can use:

Broken people,

Rejected people,

Forgotten people,

Wounded people,

for His glory.

4. Spiritual Beauty Matters Most

Physical beauty fades, but spiritual beauty remains.

God desires:

A pure heart,

Faithfulness,

Humility,

Holiness,

Love.

When the presence of God fills a person’s life, true beauty shines from within.

Conclusion

Song of Solomon 1:5 teaches us not to despise ourselves because of our condition or past. God sees beauty where others may see weakness.

You may have gone through difficult seasons, but God still calls you precious.

Declare today:

“I am valuable in the eyes of God.”

Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You for loving me and accepting me. Help me to see myself the way You see me. Remove every spirit of rejection, shame, and inferiority from my life. Let Your beauty and glory shine through me. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
